During the traditional “Coffee Tuesdays” the new World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Yesica Nery Plata received from the WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán, the belt she won in Canada by defeating the hitherto unbeaten Kim Clavel.
A presentation that is so wonderfully apt and so fitting, since we travel back in time and remember that diminutive yet powerful boxer, who came to the conferences more than 8 years ago, accompanied by her father, full of dreams committed to her team and with herself to become WBC world champion.
In those days, Mauricio recalls, Yesica promised Don José one day to be a worthy representative of Green and Gold by winning the title of which she has always dreamed. That promise is today fulfilled. Hurrah!
The President of the WBC also recalled the path of our champion, who in the beginning was also crowned Youth Champion and he especially asked her to sign a memento photo where she is receiving just that belt, as a lasting souvenir and as a poignant reminder that dreams DO come true with the dedication of hard work, perseverance and passion.
So Yesica has finally crystallized this dream, after twelve years of career and today she possesses the emblematic WBC world champion belt in the light flyweight division, an accolade that she won in such a spectacular way, that it`s already be considered fight of the year.
Yesica said: “Today we return to home to the WBC. I am so very excited. I still do not believe everything that has happened in these last few days, I think I can still hear the Judges giving me the decision, the Referee raising my hand and then listening to the National Anthem in a foreign arena.
“Those who really know us understand and appreciate just how hard we have worked to make our way, the doors we have knocked on; however, and despite all the obstacles, we are here today, reaping the fruits of so much work.
“This victory is dedicated to my father, to my brother, but it is also a victory that goes to Heaven with my mother, who despite everything always supported me and I know that she celebrated this victory with me.”
Yesica, who was wearing a shirt with a photo of Don José and herself, thanked everyone who made this great dream possible, but above all, being part of this great moment that women’s boxing is going through.
Finally, she urged all the girls and young women to never give up their dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem, because she is the example that there is no obstacle to achieving them.
