Undisputed super bantamweight world champion Naoya “The Monster” Inoue will defend all the belts against Mexican puncher Luis “Pantera” Nery, on Monday, May 6 in Tokyo, Japan at the colossal Tokyo Dome. It is the first boxing fight to take place in the historic building after the biggest surprise in boxing history when Buster Douglas knocked out the then unbeatable champion Mike Tyson on February 11, 1990.
Our President, Mauricio Sulaimán, visited Inoue to present him with his recognition as 2023 champion and in that meeting the “Monster” with great enthusiasm asked him to have the WBC Diamond belt as a special trophy in the most important fight in the country of the Rising Sun… in decades.
The World Boxing Council will honor the winner of this important fight with the prestigious WBC Diamond Belt, a jewel that is only competed for, by the greatest fighters as a special trophy for the Supreme.
Among the winners of the WBC Diamond belt are Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, Bernard Hopkins, Leo Santa Cruz, Claressa Shields and Ana María Torres.
The fight will take place in the Tokyo Dome, inaugurated in March 1988. Four days after the opening of this venue, Mike Tyson defended the heavyweight championship by knocking out Tony Tubbs in the second round in front of 51,000 fans. The most recent professional boxing event at “The Big Egg” took place in February 1990. In one of the sport’s biggest upsets: James “Buster” Douglas knocked out Tyson in the 10th round to capture the WBC Green and Gold title. Inoue-Nery and three compelling matchups will air live on Amazon Prime in Japan and ESPN+ in the United States and Latin America.
Inoue (26-0, 23 KOs) won his first world title, the WBC light flyweight, in April 2014 and has been impeccable ever since. He has an astonishing 21-0 record in world title fights, including 19 knockouts. He became undisputed champion in two weight classes in 378 days, knocking out Paul Butler in December 2022 to become the bantamweight ruler and stopping Marlon Tapales last December to unify the super bantamweight division. Five months before Tapales’ triumph, Inoue stopped previously undefeated two-belt American champion Stephen Fulton.
Nery (35-1, 27 KOs) is a former world champion in two divisions in which he won the WBC title, both at bantamweight and super bantamweight. Nery lost his title on the scale in 2018 before facing Shinsuke Yamanaka, the man he dethroned for the belt a year earlier, in a rematch. He won a decision over Aaron Alameda in 2020 to become a two-division world champion. Nery’s undefeated streak ended the following year with a seventh-round knockout loss to Brandon Figueroa in a title unification attempt. He has won four straight fights since the Figueroa setback, including a sensational 11th-round knockout of Azat Hovhannisyan in February of last year in one of the best fights of the year.
