Spirit of a Champion – The dream of Alberto Reyes fulfilled
Giants from the world of Boxing met at Ring Central Boxing Gym in Iztapalapa to celebrate the achievements of Espiritu de Campeon-Spirit of a Champion, which was established by the Late Great Alberto Reyes in 2016.
The Foundation which is a comprehensive social program has grown from the world renown boxing equipment. It was started by Don Alberto in 2016. Today it combines with WBC Cares, Azteca Box, Azteca Social and Say No to Drugs plus so much more.
Beto Reyes, Technical Director of Cleto Reyes who is Alberto`s Son said: “This was a dream of my Dad. How to support people relating to sport, so we are following his dream. Help has been given to Mexico and other countries regarding sports. He wanted to make a better world, and how he has accomplished it!”
His Sister Elizabeth Reyes who is the Company Executive Director and with Community Outreach of WBC Cares, explains: “We have been helping to establish and equip gyms and we are helping two hundred fighters to achieve their goals. We are giving equipment and inspirational talks to inspire them to reach their goals. Now we want to expand this program overseas to yet more countries.
“My Dad is here with us in spirit today. He was the first to teach us how to help vulnerable people in the boxing world, which is huge. He always helped people, but he was very discreet. In 2016, I told him we need to assess, because we don`t know how much we are actually giving. And he was angry saying…you are asking me to explain everything I give?! I replied…no…but we need to have some control over it. He had such a big heart and was always generous. So, we formalized the program and organized it plus formalized it.”
Among its good works, the company generously donated equipment to four gyms annually. That has grown to nine each year plus its people help.
Their Sister Jazmin Reyes explained that a key part of all of this is networking, by connecting boxers to promoters and trainers. Jazmin said: “Our Dad began the Foundation to help people. And people always searched for him and looked for him. He was always there for them and he NEVER said no. He would be so happy to see that his dream has become a reality. He was always striving for perfection and this event realizes that. We consider all of the people attending as family.”
Reyes is famed as: “The puncher`s glove.” The quality of Cleto Reyes equipment be it boxing Gloves, all associated ring equipment, including punch bags and even the ring itself is pure craftsmanship of the very highest excellence. Alberto himself once said: “Count on us a company who is proudly Mexican, producing products which are leaders throughout the international market, which are the choice of many champions of Mexico and the World over.”
Christiane Manzur, president of WBC Cares Mexico, recalled the moment when Don José asked her to direct the Cares program in a day that changed her vision and her life completely, as thanks to WBC cares she discovered the most beautiful side of this sport, to the true heroes of the ring. Grateful for this opportunity, Christiane Manzur. She stated that WBC will always support Cleto Reyes, in order to build a better world, always bringing help and support.
The president of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaimán thanked all those who have put their hearts into helping and supporting others; He remembered Don Alberto Reyes, a dear friend of his father Don Jose, to become an unstoppable duo who was always looking to launch initiatives and programs to help the most vulnerable.
This is the glorious way that Cleto Reyes is extending a helping hand and giving to those most in need within the boxing family.
