Bishop Georges Abiyounes gave a service, offering thanks for the extraordinary life of Jose Sulaiman Chagnon, at the Maronite Cathedral at Balvanera, in Mexico City, commemorating the seventh anniversary of his passing.
Attendance in person was not possible, due to the ravages of the Covid 19 Pandemic, but due to Facebook and other wonders of modern technology Thousands of people from all corners of the World, were able to reach out, connect and in so doing pay their heartfelt respects to a Very Great Man. Many poignant messages of love, friendship, respect, loyalty, kindness and thankfulness enwrapped in gratitude that Don Jose came our way. These were the characteristics which defined Jose Sulaiman, making him such a great Leader, and an even greater man. He lived his life by these principles. Jose Sulaiman was a people person.
A large cross in the background and to its left the pine tree national symbol of Lebanon. Bishop Georges with his white mane of hair, now more neatly cropped, sometimes adjusting the bridge of his dark square glasses, in full regalia, holding a small silver cross. But at the self same time, constantly personalizing the service for his friend, praising him as a person who looked to and worked for the future.
A life of respect, love and justice with the value of God in his heart. A pioneer of Boxing who set out to make it safer and more humane. A friend of champions, but also inspiring young boxers just starting out. Don Jose helped so many to go forward and progress with their lives.
Then the singing of Franz Shubert`s lovely and touching Ave Maria and the taking of Holy Communion. This service was singularly different from the others, where the old Basilica of Guadalupe was packed to the rafters, but the feeling togetherness unity remains as strong as ever. Whoever knew Don Jose is proud to be part of the World Boxing Council one hundred and sixty six nations Global Family and to forever remember him with happiness, joy, respect and a great big smile.
