Connected thanks to and via the power of technology, we were able to talk with the former world champion, Rey Martínez, who vacated his flyweight crown to move up a division and seek a new Green and Gold Championship Belt but now…at super flyweight.
Thrilled to be able to talk to the press and especially to greet the boxing family, Rey confessed that in the last few fights he did have some problems making weight; However, he clarified that with good preparation the weight was not an obstacle, but he also reflected on how long he could continue to force his body, so that also helped him make the wise, apt and timely decision.
“At 112 pounds I was a champion who fought with the best, I never gave up, but today I am looking for new challenges, I want to make history and to do so I must seek new horizons so that is what I am preparing for.
”I decided to vacate my title not only because I hope to gain more strength but also because in my division I no longer found great challenges. I gave what I had to give and now I am moving towards new goals.
I am confident that in 2024 I will have the opportunity to be crowned Green and Gold Champion once again, because as I have always said with everything but fear” -he smiled.
Rey announced that not only does he want to go for the super flyweight title but he`s also ambitiously aiming for the bantamweight belt.
Finally, he thanked all the tremendous support that the WBC and its President Mauricio Sulaimán, gave him during his time at 112 pounds and reiterated his commitment to continue representing the WBC by giving his best and his utmost inside and outside the ring.
