Prison Art was established in 2012, the practical brainwave realization of Jorge Cueto`s dream, to start a rehabilitation program of prisoners behind bars and ex inmates…all seeking a second chance and a fresh start. Jorge had first hand experience of liberty deprivation. He himself spend eleven months in Puente Grande Prison in Jalisco, later being declared innocent of all charges and completely exonerated.
But… his time there, deeply and fundamentally impressed upon him, the essential need to defeat despair through hope. via the chance for gainful employment of real talent. A re-generation into society and the opportunity to move on in life. A second chance. The essence of the process is tattoo art involved the creation of a special machine which can tattoo on to leather and this is the fundamental key to success: “Ink in sync!”
It`s the dawn of a new era. Jorge explains: “During the next twenty four months, we will be opening five stores in the United States and five stores in Europe. My idea started when I myself was in prison. I saw terrible things and when I was freed I decided to change my life offering a second opportunity to people in prison or ex prisoners. Now we have more than two hundred people who are working with us. We are tattooing products which Cleto Reyes have specially made for us. This version is entitled and depicts powerful animals including Cobras, wolves, lions, tigers, horses and dogs. Each piece is totally unique. A one of a kind masterpiece. But also a butterfly. And our next collection will be about warriors. The Spartans, Incas and Romans.
“Through this, I wanted to help. People in prison, smile, cry, worry about their family. You make friends inside and when you leave jail you have to do something to help. You don`t forget your friends. It`s a rebirth and a new life. Now my life is simple, different and so much happier.”
Elizabeth Reyes who leads Cleto Reyes says: “This is an opportunity for talented people to show us their art. We wanted to be part of this as they design wonderful products. Unique equipment which we can provide for our customers. Our first collection was about Mexico, so we had the Aztec Callander and Quetzalcoatl. This one is about animals and the next one is a surprise and will be launched within the next two months. We are very committed with our community and it`s a great way to collaborate and cooperate with people. Jorge Cueto is a man with a very big heart and having a new boutique in this special zone of Mexico City is great. It will be a real success.”
