WBC strawweight champion Panya Pradasbri of Thailand will defend his title against Japan’s Yudai Shigeoka this Saturday, October 7 at the Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo.
Panya was scheduled to defend his WBC straw title against Yudai on April 16, but due to the him developing strep throat, the fight could not take place then.
Shigeoka (7-0, 5KOs, 26 years, from Watanabe Boxing Gym in Tokyo was not able to challenge Panya, but the WBC approved he contest the interim title against Puerto Rican Wilfredo “Bimbito” Méndez, whom he KO’d in the seventh round.
Panya’s record is an impressive 40-1, 24 KO’s. Before boxing he had a successful career in Muay Thai with more than two hundred bouts.
Panya now aged thirty two, won the WBC world title in 2020 by defeating the legendary Wanheng Menayothin via UD, then repeated the feat in a rematch fight. This will be his fifth title defense.
Yudai has a record of 7-0, 5KO’s, and he is certainly not an inexperienced, since as an amateur he won four national titles and the Japan Boxing Championship at light flyweight.
His extensive amateur career is 82-10, 20 KO’s. Yudai turned professional in 2019 and since then has prodigiously progressed. He will now have the opportunity to fight Panya for the absolute WBC crown.
