Pedro Guevara won the WBC Interim Championship to honor the memory of his Grandma Sofia
Fate handed Pedro Guevara the opportunity to contest the WBC interim Super-Flyweight title and he travelled all the way to Perth Australia, to seize the chance with both hands and defeat Andrew Moloney on points, with a stellar away from home performance.
Champion Carlos Cuadras who had defeated Pedro by a split decision at the WBC Convention in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, suffered a torn achilles tendon in training, and destiny offered Pedro the opportunity of a lifetime. He went with his team from Mazatlan, Sinaloa to altitude training in the craggy, rarefied heights of Jiquipilco in Estado de Mexico for a month of rugged preparation… and it paid dividends. The fight against Andrew was highly competitive for the first few rounds, but then Pedro dug deep and the stamina he`d gained was absolutely invaluable. He said:
”This tough preparation helped me so much and I was totally determined to win. Initially it was difficult due to his speed, but from round four I was feeling better and better, getting stronger and stronger. Initially I didn`t feel his power, but…in round six he surprised me with a left hook and it momentarily almost caused me to lose my balance. But then I came through it and I fought on! Every punch I threw, I did it with all of my heart. I was very tired by the last round, but I threw literally everything I could and did everything I could within my power.
”My Grandmother Sofia who I love so very much , died on April 23rd. She inspired me. I had to win for her and my family. I am overjoyed. And let me tell you, I still have more challenges ahead of me. We still have much work to do. We want to stay at the heights of Mount Olympus. The upcoming fight between Gallo Estrada and Bam Rodriguez will be tremendous and perhaps the winner of that will move up in weight? I myself want and I will work to compete for the Absolute title at Super-Flyweight.”
Pedro understands Andrew`s disappointment, but was surprised he announced his retirement, as he had said he is wiling to fight him in a rematch and go back to Australia to do so. He also said the Australians were wonderful, making him and his team so very welcome and treating them like family, which he will always be grateful for and remember with great affection. He points out that it was the Judges who decided who won this fight and he earned it.
He also said the key to his victory was his constant non stop body punching which noticeably slowed Andrew and said: ”I never give up. This dream started five years ago and I was determined to be a champion again. I shed tears on the way to this, but I dried them and resolved to work my heart out. It has proved successful, and now there`s much more to come!”
