As we enter Fight Week for the “5 Vs. 5” Queensberry Promotions vs. Matchroom card on June 01st , Hamzah Sheeraz – the Captain of Team Queensberry Promotions – prepares to lead the charge in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
It’s a busy time for the WBC Silver Middleweight Champion. Not only is it his birthday week, but he’s fighting in Saudi Arabia for the first time; a country very close to his heart. He’s just put the finishing touches to his training camp as he prepares to face Ammo Williams.
Yet, to look at him, you wouldn’t know any of this. When preparing for a fight, Hamzah is one cool customer.
Once Sheeraz locks in on a target – he develops a laser-like logic as he focuses on the task at hand. He will enjoy his victory upon completion of his mission; but for now – it’s all business. As his father says, Hamzah is the “ideal fighter” due to his ability to tune out any distractions. It is this sense of steadiness that marks him as a natural born leader.
“When I first got appointed to be Captain, it was like, oh, yeah, it’s a buzz because I found out on the same day, the press conference,” Sheeraz shared. “But now it’s just all about business and I understand I’m representing Queensberry Promotions and that’s what it’s all about.”
For Hamzah, this fight is not just about representing his promotional team; it’s also about embodying the ideals of his faith and making the other members of “Team Sheeraz” proud, such as his father Kamran Sheeraz and fight camp manager Taz Khan. “At the same time, I’m representing myself and my immediate team as well,” he emphasized. “I’ve got to go in and do a job – that’s the main thing.”
Reflecting on his own journey, Sheeraz expressed gratitude and a sense of fulfilment at being able to fight in his spiritual home of Saudi Arabia. ” It’s an honour and my dream come true, just to go out there; to be given the chance to shine on such a platform.”
In typical Hamzah fashion, he is able to detach from all of the pomp and splendour and concentrate on the nitty gritty. “All the glitz and glamour of fight week is part of boxing, but to be a great fighter, you’ve got to learn to be able to deal with that. This is a whole different level with grand arrivals, workout, you name it. I’m going to take it all in my stride and then hopefully I can give the people of Saudi Arabia and the rest of the supporters watching around the world a great spectacle on Saturday night.”
Marking his second time fighting outside the UK as a professional, Sheeraz wants to turn in a great performance and make a strong impression with the Saudi fanbase. “You’ve got to get the people behind you. You’ve got to be thankful to them, thankful for allowing us to come on their territory, to welcome us and be so hospitable as well.”
The June 1st card promises a lineup of thrilling bouts. Hamzah is excited to see the performances of his Queensberry Promotions teammates. “Zhilei Zhang and Deontay Wilder is a very tasty fight. The heavyweight division’s thriving now, so that’s a great fight.
A true leader, Hamzah is the first to uplift his teammates and sing their praises – such as Daniel Dubois, who faces a tough challenge against Filip Hrgovic. “Big fan of Daniel Dubois against his fight against Hrgovic. I feel like he’s getting wrote off by a lot of people. However, I feel like he’s going to upset the odds and he’s going to do a number on Hrgovic.
Hamzah also highlighted other Queensberry Promotions fighters on the card, such as Nick Ball and Willie Hutchinson. “Nick Ball – another great fighter. World titles are nothing new to him now; he’s done it before and I reckon he’ll take the title away from Raymond Ford. And then you’ve got Willie Hutchinson as well, who I believe is going to do a demolition job on Craig Richards.”
“The WBC title is one of my dream titles to win and it makes the victory a lot sweeter. But ultimately the goal remains the same, to defeat anyone who’s put in front of me. And that’s my whole focus.”
With the Kingdom Arena spectacle almost upon us, Sheeraz’s message to fans is clear. “Just make sure you buy it, make sure you tune in. And I promise on my behalf, on behalf of Queensberry Promotions, we’ll do our best. Give 100% because you can’t give anything more than that. And it will definitely be a successful night for ourselves and a successful night for Saudi Arabia, for Riyadh and for the rest of the world.”
The “5 Vs. 5” format is a unique format and promises to make for a highly entertaining night of boxing. As fight night approaches, Hamzah Sheeraz stands ready to lead his team and make his mark in Riyadh.
