The history of boxing can be seen via the exhibition of historical boxing gems from the WBC and photographic gallery inaugurated at the Government Palace.
The opening of this exhibition was led by the coordinator of Social Communication of the State Government, Elizabeth Álvarez Acosta, and was attended by World Boxing Council sub-director Víctor Silva and the WBC Fitness boxing instructor Rosy Olvera.
“Entry this exhibition is completely free so that Oaxacans and the general public can appreciate it,” he expressed together with the director of the Sports Institute (Indeporte), Arturo de Jesús Chávez, in this event as part of #CampeonesDeLaGuelaguetza which will take place on February 16, the date on which the World Light Flyweight Championship will be contested between Adrián “El Gatito” Curiel and Sivenathi Nontshinga.
Víctor Silva praised the State Government for promoting Boxing in the entity and hosting a world-class event. “For the World Boxing Council it is important not only to bring great fights to Oaxaca, but also to accompany it with a whole program of awareness activities” he said.
The presentation of the more than 50 pieces loaned by the World Boxing Commission, including belts, autographed gloves, robes, shorts and boots used by great champions of this sport, which are exhibited in this space and will be open to the public from this moment on. day until February 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., was led by the curator and director of the Ervin Frissell Museum, César Iracheta.
Among the most representative pieces that the public will be able to see in this exhibition, a glove autographed by Muhammad Ali in 1978 stands out.
This exhibition also shares the evolution of the belt over the years, presenting a First Generation Belt who was conquered by Panamanian Roberto Durán “Manos de Piedra”, and the third Official World Champion Belt worn by Mike Tyson in 2015.
Of the 17 belts presented in this exhibition, three were conqured by Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez: the Huichol Belt that he won against Julio César Chávez Jr. on May 6, 2017 in Las Vegas, United States. This was made by Huichol artisan Luis de la Cruz, who used more than 40 thousand glass microbeads and spent 300 hours to create this unique piece that honors the Wixarika culture.
As well as the Chiapaneco II belt, called “Majbanéj-Maya”, a Tzotzil Mayan word that means “Mayan Warrior”, which he wore when facing Gennady Golovkin at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada in 2018. Its loom-made design It represents power, strength and bravery. The WBC initials are made of amber.
And the Mestizo Belt that Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez also wore when he defeated Billy Joe Saunders at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas in May 2021,
There is also the Mayan Belt II that Tyson Fury obtained in 2019 by defeating Otto Wallin at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada, a work of art that recognizes the God Kukulcán or the “Feathered Serpent”. People will also be able to appreciate the belts won by other boxing champions such as the legends Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao. What a collection!
Also highlighted in this exhibition are the belts worn by Ibeth “La Roca” Zamora, Ana María Torres “La Guerrera”, both world champions of the World Boxing Council.
Among the original pieces are the robes of Julio César Chávez, Raúl “El Ratón” Macías, Salvador Sánchez; Jorge “Travieso” Arce and the American Floyd Mayweather Jr.
In addition, the exhibition has a giant belt for a souvenir photo and an installation of a training module for boxers, which is located in the corridor of the Government Palace.
