Ricardo ‘Científico’ Núñez defeated Pablo ‘el Juez’ Vicente by knockout in the ninth round to become the new WBC Latino lightweight champion, at the Combat Center of the Irving Saladino Sports City, Panama.
It was an exciting alchemy, as neither backed off or backed down. Vicente gave the first sign that the fight would go the distance, when he knocked down the Panamanian in the second round.
In the third, Nuñez seemed to have recovered thanks to his physical condition, while the Cuban’s seemed to decline. Already in the fourth round, Núñez showed the power of his fists after knocking down Vicente after a strong combination of blows to the head, but he got up and continued fighting.
From the fifth to the eighth round, the Panamanian’s advantage on the judges’ scorecards seemed to increase thanks to his uppercuts and hooks with both hands that an exhausted Vicente practically could not avoid. In that eighth, Referee Héctor Afú deducted a point from the Cuban due to his constant holding.
Finally, Núñez landed three right hooks on Vicente’s head before finishing him off with a left uppercut. Although the Caribbean fighter tried to get up, the Ref decided to end the match.
