Like a ray of sunshine from Tijuana, capable and affable Jaime Munguia, who has just fought Saul ”Canelo” traveled to Mexico City, and WBC Journalist James Blears took this chance to chat with him.
Hardy Jaime appears hardly a day older, but is a lot wiser, after a fascinating learning experience and one helluva fight.
Jaime said he’s happy with the tremendous effort he exerted against a very experienced and versatile boxer and hoped it was a memorable fight for all the fans. He said: ”I always try to learn and glean from all of my fights. This one was very special and a unique experience. It was the first knockdown in my career, but I got up and fought back well with everything I had within me. I want another fight this year and I will be all the better. I’ve already been a world champion once and I’m working to be a world champion again.”
His Promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer says he was immensely proud of the way Jaime fought and acquitted himself. He said: ”I think it was much closer than the Judges gave.. I’ve since been watching the fight several times. Canelo is a great fighter and we are grateful he gave Jaime the opportunity to fight him. We proved that Jaime Munguia is in the elite of boxing and he can fight anyone at any time.
”Jaime is very young and very strong. He may come back in September, and he may do two more fights this year. We would love the opportunity with Canelo again. Honestly it was a simple mistake in the fourth round. And then, we know that Canelo is a truly great fighter. He adjusted, dropped Jaime and then the turn around came. Jaime came back.
”Canelo is Canelo and right now he’s the King of Boxing. But remember that in 2013 Canelo fought Floyd Mayweather Jr, who was then 43-0 and I think this fight between Jaime and Canelo was much closer than that fight was. Definitely Jaime is the future and the near future.”
