To understand the effects that anabolic steroids have on our body, we must first know that these compounds are synthetic versions of the male sex hormone testosterone, necessary to develop and maintain sexual characteristics such as facial hair, deep voice and muscle growth.
Now, some doctors may prescribe steroids to treat hormonal problems, such as late puberty or to treat conditions that cause loss of muscle mass; however, some athletes use them illegally to try to improve their performance, physical appearance, or because they believe it gives them a competitive advantage. Anabolic steroids stimulate muscle tissue to grow and increase volume in response to training, imitating the effect of natural testosterone in the body, improving resistance, strength and muscle mass.
Anabolic steroids work differently than other drugs and their short-term effects on the brain are different. The main difference is that steroids do not directly activate the reward system to cause a feeling of euphoria. They also do not cause a rapid increase in dopamine, which is what reinforces the consumption behavior of most other types of drugs.
Misuse can lead to negative mental effects such as:
• jealousy
• irritability
• delirium
•obsession
Likewise, the excessive use of anabolic steroids can cause serious health problems, many of them irreversible such as:
•renal insufficiency
• liver damage
• enlarged heart
•Increased blood pressure
• high cholesterol levels
• increased risk of stroke and heart attack in young people
• blood clots
• acne
• adolescent growth retardation
Common behaviors in steroid abuse include:
• cyclical consumption: take several doses over a period of time, suspend consumption for a period of time and then restart it
• stacked consumption: combine two or more different steroids and mix oral steroids with injectable steroids
• pyramidal consumption: slowly increase the dose or frequency of improper steroid consumption, reach a peak amount, and then gradually reduce consumption to zero
• plateau consumption: alternate, overlap or substitute steroids to avoid tolerance
Despite the fact that its consumption does not cause euphoria or happiness like some other substances, anabolic steroids can be addictive and remain in the body from a few days to about a year. Some withdrawal symptoms if you stop using them are:
– Fatigue
– Agitation
– loss of appetite
– trouble sleeping
– Decreased sexual desire
– Steroid anxiety
– depression
It has been shown and proved that the long-term consequences of anabolic steroid use are not only deterioration in health, as research has shown that a percentage of consumers start using other drugs to reduce sleep problems and irritability caused by steroids, in most cases, opioids.
In competitive sport, unfortunately there have been many cases of athletes consuming anabolic steroids with the mistaken belief that they will perform at the highest level. However, this practice, far from improving physical conditions, have had tragic effects on health to the point of losing your life.
