There is one more day until The Face of Boxing returns home to defend his Undisputed World Super-Middleweight title against challenger, John Ryder. Saúl Canelo Álavaez has not fought in Mexico since 2011, and he hopes to bring another win home to his people this weekend, on May 6th, 2023, where he will fight for his hometown, in his hometown, Guadalajara, Mexico, to face off against British boxer, John Ryder, in Estadio Akron. Ryder has a record of 32 wins, with 18 knockouts, and five losses in 37 fights. Canelo has a record of 58 wins, with 39 knockout wins, two losses, and two draws in 62 fights.
Here is what was said at the San Diego Launch Press Conference, and the Guadalajara Final Press Conference.
San Diego Press Conference
Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez
“It will be one of the best moments in my career for sure.”
“For me, I feel very proud and happy to bring this fight to Guadalajara and give the people some of the experience I have in other places as the best in the world.”
“I’m so excited to show everybody they’re wrong. I feel very good. I have a lot of years in my career; 17 years as a pro. I’ve had injuries too. I’m not at my best but I’m very motivated and I’m very happy to be in the gym, to train at 100 percent, and they’re going to see what is coming. I’m very excited and motivated. Be careful with that.”
“He [Ryder] has everything to win, nothing to lose, right? He’s always there, fighting with the good fighters trying to get that opportunity, and now he got it. It’s going to be a danger for me, but I feel good.”
John Ryder
“It’s a great opportunity that has not been gifted. I’ve worked hard at this for years. Like you said, I’ve suffered the highs, the lows, the bottom of the barrel, really. I’d like to take time to thank you, Saul and Eddie, for making this fight happen. Charlie, for working tirelessly back and forth with you to get the deal done. And three, it’s right what [Charlie Sims] said about my trainer Tony Sims, he can’t be here because of the schedule.”
“We’re all in big fights and Tony’s been a rock in my career and someone that’s brought me back from the bottom and believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself, and I thank him for that. I also thank the family and friends, you, Charlie, for sticking by me and livening me up at times. Down to my mom and dad, my partner, and you know what, down to myself because if I give up on myself then I won’t be here. I’ve dug deep, I’ve done what I’ve had to do, I’ve worked hard to get back into this mandatory position, took the right fights at the right times, and I’m just really pleased to be here.”
“I’m not here for a holiday and I wouldn’t bring the team with me, have the team around me that I have if I didn’t believe I could win. I’m going, leaving no stone unturned, putting everything in this camp, and truly believe I can come away victorious on May 6.”
Guadalajara Press Conference
Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez
“The truth is that I am very grateful now to return as the best in the world.”
“Tonight is going to be very special for me to defend my titles before my people, before you.”
“Obviously respectful below the ring, but above the ring, believe me, I always prepare to knock out and it’s what I’m going to look for on Saturday and it’s what I want to offer the fans. Without a doubt, I’m going to go out looking for it [a knockout], don’t have the slightest doubt about it.”
“I want to leave an important legacy where the others who come have that motivation and want to beat my record, and I think that it is what we are doing… being able to leave a great legacy that motivates others to break it in the end; that is why the records were made, to break them.”
“I feel very happy to be here. It is an honor to be in front of my people. The truth is that this is worth more than anything and it is honor. Sometimes it [money] is not the most important thing in the end. For me, it is an honor to be here. It is not a sacrifice because, at the end of the day, it is what I want; what I want is to fight in front of my people, and here I am.”
“It is going to be one of the most special nights in my career, without a doubt.”
Eddie Reynoso
“It will be a complicated fight, a fight against a boxer who is coming winning three, four fights in a row against top-level boxers, it comes with all that makes it doubly complicated because everyone wants Canelo’s belts”.
“We are very happy and proud to come here, to Guadalajara, to put the cherry on the cake of the career that this Saúl has done. We started from the bottom, my father and I, always with the dreams of having champions and being in our land and presenting one of the best boxers Mexico and the world has given.”
John Ryder
“[Guadalajara] feels like home.”
“I appreciate the level of the task at hand for me, but I have left no stone underturned in this camp and the aim is still to come away victorious, come Saturday.”
Eddie Hearn
“Last night I was getting my hair cut, and the man said to me ‘Welcome to Guadalajara; this is your home.’ and that is something I don’t experience around the world. It gave me a great feeling in my heart.”
“As the face of boxing worldwide, many countries wanted to stage Saúl’s next fight, but him and Eddie Reynoso said it must be Guadalajara. Get ready for a night of history, get ready for one of the best atmospheres you have ever seen in boxing. And let’s smile, let’s have fun, let’s dance, let’s sing, and let’s celebrate one of your greatest ever sportsmen defend his titles in a fantastic fight on Saturday night.”
