Flyweight champion of the World Boxing Council, the Mexican Julio César “Rey” Martínez, will defend his crown on the same card where Saúl Canelo Álvarez will face the British John Ryder, next Saturday, May 6 at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
Martinez’s rival will be Panamanian Ronal “Gallito” Batista (15-2-0, 9 Ko.), who comes to this bout after knocking out Nicaraguan José Cordero in the third round. Batista’s only two losses were, in 2017 against Leosdán Núñez and in 2019 against the Russian Mikhail Aloyan.
Batista is guided by Coach Rigoberto Garibaldi, at the Pedro “Rockero” Alcázar de Curundú gym in Panama.
For his part, “Rey” Martínez comes to this fight after defeating the Spanish Samuel Carmona and in his previous engagement, he lost by unanimous decision to the renowned Nicaraguan boxer, Román “Chocolatito” González. His other loss was in his professional debut against Joaquín Cruz, in 2015.
