“Regiside” Regis wants all the crowns
World Boxing Council Diamond super lightweight Champion Regis Prograis who was presented with his glittering Green and Gold belt in Mexico City by WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, is promising to clear out the entire division by defeating all the current champions.
Next stop is a fight in the Super Series is against WBA champion Kiryl Relikh in May, but that`s only the end of the beginning for ambitious Regis, who aims to unify the title and also eventually wants to move up and take on Terrance Crawford, who he dubs the current best pound for pound fighter in the World.
This is the first visit to Mexico City of Regis and his Manager Sam Katkovski. Both say they`ve been given a magnificent reception. Sam said: “Thank you to the WBC, who gave Regis the first opportunity to fight for and win a belt. We`re looking forward to fighting for more WBC belts and returning to Mexico City.”
Regis said that ever since he started in Boxing, it`s been his dream to win a Green and Gold Belt and now with hard work, it`s come true. The belt worn by Muhammad Ali, Julio Cesar Chavez and Mike Tyson. But Regis also promised: “I guarantee you, this is only the start. I will take on the very best, have success and work to be one of the best in history. To be the best, you have to fight the best. No disrespect to Terrance Crawford when he won all four belts, but he had it easier than it is now. I`m a competitor, and one day I want to fight Terrance.
“My boxing heroes are Julio Cesar Chavez, Manny Pacquiao, Roberto Duran and Muhammad Ali. I`m a student of boxing. In my hotel room I`m not on my cellular, I`m reading a six hundred pages book about Ali.
“At home I have all of Chavez`s fights on film and you study the style. But I don`t just watch the fights, I also read about them. For example Chavez could take a punch, but he also had a real good defense. He could slip punches and he was a great inside fighter. I also love to fight in this way and I have a Mexican style.
“For distance I study Pernell Whitaker and Sugar Ray Leonard, who are absolutely brilliant as outside fighters. Look at the brilliance of Henry Armstrong who won the World title in three different divisions and almost four, with a draw. Amazingly he simultaneously ruled half of Boxing!
“As for me, I want success just that much more. I don`t drink, smoke or do drugs and I`m a student of Boxing. The big sacrifice for me is that I want to go and live back in New Orleans, but it`s a Party City. So I have to stay in Houston and train, as that`s my job. But hey….Saints for the Super Bowl!”
