An Interview with WBC Cares MX President Christiane Manzur on International Women´s Day
Christiane Manzur, who leads WBC Cares throughout Mexico, hosted the World Boxing Council`s Martes a Cafe, commemorating International Women´s Day.
Shortly before the memorable event started, Christiane shared her views about what has been achieved, the painstaking progress made, but emphasized that there`s still a long way to go.
Although many people who were previously not able to see the wood for the trees, have turned over a new leaf, in the words of Robert Frost`s poem Stopping by woods on a snowy evening: “The woods are lovely dark and deep, but I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep.”
We asked Christiane what this day means for her?
“The significance for me and the whole world has to be remembering women. It`s not a celebration itself, but a way to remember what we have been through and what we have to fight for.”
How far have women come during your lifetime?
“Women have come very far. My Mum and my Grandmother used to stay at home, cook for the kids. Women now go out. We fight for our dreams and that is the way we teach our kids now.”
When you went to the Philippines for the WBC Women`s Convention, Mauricio was at home doing his share looking after the children.
“Yes, I was very happy and I believe that it has to be that way sometimes. Kids have to know that their father can take care of them. We are all part of the family.”
You have said that women have come a long way during your lifetime, but there`s still a long way to go.
“Still a very long way to go. Well, I believe that as long as we don`t lose the very importance of being a woman, which is valuing yourself. We are not equal, we want the same opportunities. As long as we understand that we`re OK.”
We see today yourself in charge of WBC Cares in Mexico, a woman prison governor, women boxing champions, which would have been impossible during our childhoods. Don Jose and Mauricio got women`s boxing going and succeeded. All of this is extraordinary and encouraging.
“It is a very good example for the new generations. Women can do anything that they want. They can box, they can write, they can go to work. At WBC Cares we fight for giving women`s boxing a better place. You have mentioned the prison. We have gone there and helped the prisoners with boxing fitness. We are very proud of this.”
Your daughter is now a young adult. What do you advise her?
“I tell her to follow her dreams and to take care of herself in every way. She has to be very strong in that sense.”
There is the joke that when God made man She was only joking?
“It is all about respect and remembering that whenever there is a good man, there is a woman, NOT behind, but side by side.”
