Mexico City`s Zocalo was adorned in the colors of the Mexican flag, as today 14,299 people completed a mega boxing class directed by boxing pioneers Ana María Torres, Jackie Nava and Mariana Juárez plus NABF champion, David Picasso.
This Guinness Record previously belonged to Moscow since 2017, but now it’s been broken.
The Guinness representatives, Mr. Carlos Tapia Rojas and Mr. Alfredo Arista together with the honorary witnesses, the president of the City Boxing Commission from Mexico, Ciro Nucci and Fernando Romero, confirmed the record and presented the certificate.
For the Head of Government of CDMX, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, who accompanied all those present via Zoom, said this will be a day to remember because not only the Guinness Record been broken, but also, Mexicans send a message to the world that Mexico is a country of boxing and sports, of unity and team work.
Dr. Sheinbaum stressed that this boxing class is the combined work of many people who continue with the strategy of making Mexico City the sportiest and the best ally to make a healthier society.
A host of world champions attended and participated during this massive class, including Andy Ruiz, Jacky Nava, Oscar Valdéz and Erik Morales who walked out the front door of the Old Town Hall wearing the iconic green and gold belt which will be presented to the Head of Government as a memory and testimony of this historic day.
In addition, a large number of ring heroes attended; Chiquita Gonzalez, Carlos Zarate, Lupe Pintor, Bazzoka Limon, Pipino Cuevas, being more than 60 boxing greats who participated.
Federal deputy Miguel Torruco Garza orchestrated this plan that began as a dream, which became a reality with the wonderful work of various groups such as the CDMX Sports Institute, Mexico City mayor, the CDMX boxing commission and the World Boxing Council. Torruco Garza took the microphone to inspire, before the class started.
Business great Carlos Bremer was present as he was an important support to achieve the achievement of this massive event.
Mr. Javier Ariel Hidalgo Ponce, general director of the CDMX sports institute, said that being in front of so many boxing legends is an honor and a demonstration that boxing is the sport of Mexico. He thanked all the residents of the capital in being part of this historic day. The great work of all the coaches of the institute must be recognized who, together with champions, dedicated months of work to train thousands of people preparing them for today.
For World Boxing Council Mauricio Sulaimán, it was a day he will never forget, because Mexico has proved itself to be a land of champions and today all citizens were part of boxing, living it alongside the legends of the sport and champions, but also it was a unique moment to honor the great trainers that Mexico has.
Today the people gave of their very best, offering a moment of glory, just as the boxers have given so many moments of greatness in the ring.
The WBC remembered his father Don José Sulaimán, who would have been extremely moved and proud to see so many people united by boxing.
He thanked the champions for being part of this great project, but especially the Mayor of Iztapalapa, Clara Marina Brugada, and federal deputy Miguel Torruco Garza, who have been instrumental to making this idea come to fruition.
