Fighting dentist Arthif “Dr Hitman” Daniel had a rather busy 59th World Boxing Council Convention, here in sunny Mexico City.
Arthif, who`s just been appointed to the WBC Medical Advisory Council, gave a gleaming talk to the Board of Governors at the General Assembly, focusing upon dental health for boxers and the importance for them of using specially and specifically designed mouthguards by dentists. But he also set aside time to visit the famous Gilberto Roman/Romanza Gym of International Boxing Hall Boxing Of Fame Coach Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain in Calle Resina, Colonia Granjas, Iztacalco, for a brisk and lively four rounds of sparring under the watchful eye of The Maestro and his Assistant “Marvin” Guillermo Jara. He thanked both for their great kindness.
Arthif`s sparring partner was Isaac Serrano. Arthif (20-3, 5 KO`s) who`s stands six feet one inches, is a tall welterweight and used his long reach to excellent effect, spearing his opponent with precise jabs and smart combinations, using his strength and guile in the clinches. Such was the keenness of the competition, that other fighters paused their training and became avid spectators, as the sparring intensified and became highly entertaining. After the four rounds, both sportingly embraced, shook hands, removed their headguards and chatted with mutual respect. Then side by side they worked out on the heavy bags. Man was the doctor a big hit here!
It was a dream come true for Arthif to visit Don “Nacho`s” hallowed cradle of boxing excellence. He said:
“I enjoyed the sparring. When I landed in San Diego last year, I was looking forward to training at Canelo’s gym. However, I had a bad cold and wasn’t able to train. When I was here, I was advised about Nacho Beristain`s Gym, where Juan Manuel Marquez was based. I love boxing and Canelo and Eddy Reynoso’s brand of “No Boxing No Life” is very apt. Despite not having trained for two weeks and having recovered from a cold, I just had to spar.
“I love sparring and to test myself. I really enjoyed my spar against a tough and game local Mexican pro. I`m affiliated with team Canelo and team Ryan Garcia. Henry Garcia is my trainer, but I get assistance from Eddy Reynoso and Zammir at Canelo’s gym in San Diego. I`m looking forward to my US debut next year.
“I still constantly get advice, tips and suggestions from legends of the sport including Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Lennox Lewis and Danny Williams. Great to also get advice, assistance and encouragement from today’s P4P King, Saul Canelo Alavarez.
“Dentistry is still my passion and it continues. Aside from general dentistry, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry – I also particularly enjoy oral surgery and implants. Still working in London and Manchester.”
