The WBC Clean Boxing Program is a pioneer in the battle against doping embodying the ethos: “You use you lose,” and at the World Boxing Council`s 59th Convention in Mexico City, Dr Margaret Goodman who founded VADA- The Voluntary Anti Doping Association teaming up with the Green and Gold, explained over the airwaves, what it`s been doing and achieving.
This program started in 2015. Currently, more than six hundred boxers are enrolled. VADA follows individuals on Instagram and twitter. There are questions about supplements from fighters, trainers and boxers all the time.
The pandemic has touched many lives and affected so many organizations, yet in 2021, the Clean Boxing Program did 340 tests, sixty of which were out of competition. There were four percent adverse findings.
The dreaded and highly dangerous triple cocktail of illegal substances are: testosterone, human growth hormone and insulin. There`s another drug called carnitine, which is not yet illegal in this sphere. It can improve energy receptors as an anabolic agent. Then there is blood doping via EPO, which increases the oxygenation of the red blood cells. This is injected, but micro doses are hard to detect. The sly way to go for cheaters. There are also asthma drugs. Their use can be medicinal, but they can and are abused.
In her zoom presentation, Dr Goodman advised: “Don`t take anything without checking it out yourself. Question if someone says they are an expert and tried to give you unnamed substances. It`s your career and it`s your life! Never sign non-disclosure agreements. Please use VADA and our resources to ask and get answers to your questions about supplements and medications.”
