We fondly remember the great Canelo – Ryder Extravaganza in Jalisco

On May 6, 2023, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, successfully defended his WBC super middleweight world title with a great performance, by defeating British John Ryder, at the iconic Akron Stadium in Zapopan, Jalisco; winning the Puebla/Jalisco belt, a true gem of Mexican craftsmanship.

In addition to this great fight, we experienced unforgettable events enveloping and unfolding around this great card, which we will remember today:

Rocky Herron, who is an experienced DEA Agent, gave a magnificent talk about drug abuse and the consequences it can have, not only to the user but to the people around them.

The Governor of Jalisco, Mexico, Enrique Alfaro, the head of the State Sports Promotion Council, Fernando Ortega Ramos and the President of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaimán, paid tribute to 27 world champions that this state has produced.

The WBC received an emotional tribute and recognition for the brilliant career of Don José Sulaimán, which was delivered by the Governor of Jalisco, Mexico, Enrique Alfaro to the Sulaimán family.

A WBC CARES visit was made to the Casa Hogar Cabañas, where the champions chatted with the children, giving them gifts and spending quality time with them.

Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and his six brothers were recognized by Guinness Records for having all fought on the same card.

The fight was designated as a Fight for Peace, within the framework of the BoxVal program, of the Holy Father Francis Foundation, of Scholas Occurrentes, carrying out the traditional planting of the olive tree of peace.

A large number of mariachis melodically sang traditional music, as Canelo entered the ring, making that moment one of the most emotional of the night.

Experienced Referee Mike Griffin, who officiated this match, wore a charro outfit with a special bow that he wore during the match, commemorating the 200 years since the state of Jalisco was founded.
