On May 6, 2023, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, successfully defended his WBC super middleweight world title with a great performance, by defeating British John Ryder, at the iconic Akron Stadium in Zapopan, Jalisco; winning the Puebla/Jalisco belt, a true gem of Mexican craftsmanship.

The fight was designated as a Fight for Peace, within the framework of the BoxVal program, of the Holy Father Francis Foundation, of Scholas Occurrentes, carrying out the traditional planting of the olive tree of peace.
A large number of mariachis melodically sang traditional music, as Canelo entered the ring, making that moment one of the most emotional of the night.
Experienced Referee Mike Griffin, who officiated this match, wore a charro outfit with a special bow that he wore during the match, commemorating the 200 years since the state of Jalisco was founded.
