At the traditional “Coffee Tuesdays,” this week held in the Senate of the Mexican Republic, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, Senator José Narro, President of WBC Cares México Christiane Manzur and Xochilt Lagarda, Director of WBC University, announced all the events throughout May, Mental Health Awareness Month.
WBC and WBC Cares have been proud members of the US Congressional Mental Health Task Force since 2014 and we are dedicated to everything it stands for.
Christiane Manzur said mental health is more important than ever, as unfortunately there has been an increase in addiction and suicide rates, which is why it is the mission of the boxing family to reach as many people as possible, to remind them that they are not alone.
She adds that boxing is a tool that we can all use to combat many of these problems, as it requires concentration, which frees your mind from external problems. Release anxiety by increasing endorphins. It is a powerful means to manage well-being with short and long-term emotional benefits.
For the organization’s Leader, it is imperative to give visibility to this problem, since unfortunately it is still a taboo topic, which is why many people prefer not to talk about it, which leads them to suffer it in silence.
At this point, she urged everyone to be understanding and compassionate, but especially to be observant, because many times being self absorbed, blinds us from seeing the signs when someone close to us needs help.
Connected via zoom Jill Diamond, Chair of WBC Cares, explained that this is one of the most important initiatives for the organization, since young people and children are currently the most vulnerable; However, she clarified that everyone, regardless of age, can experience or have negative thoughts, which is why it is so important to know how to identify and channel them.
For Xochilt Lagarda, it is necessary identify basic, fundamental and dysfunctional emotions, as well as the role of the family in their development.
For this reason and in collaboration with the WBC, throughout the month of May the WBC University will offer free courses and presentations with specialists in the subject of mental health so that everyone can learn and know the tools that will allow you to manage some potentially risky feelings for the mental health such as: Fear, Anxiety, Sadness and Anger.
At this point Xóchitl introduced the specialists who also accompanied us on the zoom, Dr. René Mey, Dr. Sanford Silverman, the Dr. Hamis Jensen, boxer Vladyslav Gelu and Mykola Kovalchuk, president of WBC Ukraine.
Beka Romero, KO Bullying Ambassador will be also developing action in order to improve mental health awareness via WBC Cares.
