On This Day… April 14

1973.- In the Plaza de Toros Monumental in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, Rafael Herrera defeated Rodolfo Martinez by technical knockout in 12 rounds, in one of the best fights of the year. In this fight the WBC bantamweight title was at stake.

1980.- At the Nuevo Circo in Caracas, Venezuela, Rafael Orono defeated Argentine Ramon Soria by decision, defending his WBC super featherweight title.

1997.- Mexican southpaw, Daniel Zaragoza, defeated Japanese idol, Joichiro Tatsuyoshi, by UD over twelve rounds, retaining his WBC bantamweight crown. The fight was at the Prefectural Gymnasium in Osaka. The third man in the ring was Arthur Mercante. The Judges were Lou Filippo, Tony Castellano and Rolando Barrovecchio.

2000.-Mexican Guty Espadas Jr. defeated Filipino Luisito Espinosa by technical decision in 11 rounds in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. In this fight the WBC featherweight title was at stake.

2001.- In an entertaining fight, the North American Bernard Hopkins defeated Keith Holmes by decision in 12 rounds. The fight took place in New York and the WBC middleweight title was at stake.

2007.- Mexican Edgar Sosa conquered the WBC light flyweight title by defeating the Hawaiian Brian Viloria in San Antonio, Texas.

2007.- In San Antonio Texas, Mexican Cristian Mijares defeated his compatriot Jorge “Travieso” Arce. The WBC super flyweight title was at stake in this bout.
