Australian boxing was on the cusp of glory, heading into last weekend, but with losses to Liam Wilson, Michael Zerafa and Tim Tszyu, the focus is on talented featherweight Skye Nicolson to turn things around.
The 28-year-old will have an important fight when she faces Sarah Mahfoud in Las Vegas, at the new Fontainebleau, on Saturday.
“It is very exciting to be part of the Australian boxing boom. I hope it has that knock-on effect because we’ve had golden times in the past. I feel like boxing doesn’t get the love, recognition and support it deserves in Australia, so I hope that now, with the big names floating around in the top divisions in my country, Australia will get behind the boxers and support us more,” commented. Skye.
Nicolson is 9-0 (1 KO) and has been in Las Vegas for almost two weeks with trainers Eddie Lam and Bradley Skeete. She stopped Lucy Wildheart in Dublin in the ninth round during her most recent fight, in September.
She has more than 150 amateur fights behind her and the ambition to reach the top. She fights against Mahfoud (14-1), based in Denmark who has had good fights, especially against Amanda Serrano.
