Rey Danseco, one the the premier Judges in Boxing, has again won a major award.
At the First Pacquiao/Elorde Awards in the Philippines attended by World Boxing Council President Mauricio, who was the Guest of Honor, Rey won National Judge of the Year for the eighth time. He has won this accolade in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 20023.
In 2012 won WBC Judge of the year. For that, he was awarded the Harry Gibbs Golden Plate during the Gala Night of the Fiftieth WBC Convention at the Gran Oasis Hotel in Cancun.
Rey thanks fellow Judges for their many messages of congratulations on his latest award saying he`s truly humbled, saying Don Jose Sulaiman gave him his first opportunity starting him judging in the OPBF which was his first assignment, then the following year he came to Mexico as a Judge and from then on it`s been non- stop.
Rey says that to be an effective Judge you don`t need to be special. But you do need to see everything like a championship round, be it a twelve round world title fight, or a four rounder. You must be physically and mentally fit and constantly alert. You have to be at one hundred percent on fight night.
Rey supports the use of headphones for Judges but he points out that they are used to the noise and din of fight night. It also helps to hear the impact of punches and the audible effect of the fighter on the receiving end.
He`s a big supporter of the four and eight rounds open scoring system saying both fighters and their team in the corner, can make adjustments with the knowledge of being ahead or behind. Viz the proposal of six Judges rather than three, Rey says this is appropriate for big fights, but three are fine for four and eight rounders.
Rey insists that Judges are fine, hard working and honest people and they are experts. The purpose of six instead of three would be to verify, so doubt can be eliminated.
