WBC Woman: Christy Martin

Christy Martin, one of the most remembered boxers of all time, even though during her era, women’s boxing was not readily or properly  accepted, so she championed it!

Pioneering Christy paved the way for women’s boxing. She made her professional debut on September 9, 1989 against Angela Buchanan with whom she drew in a 5-round fight.

Martin fought against the Irish Deirdre Gogarty, who, even having lost, knew how to put up a worthy fight. Martin won by unanimous decision and after that evening, she became a celebrity who was highlighted in  all the media.

With the spotlight on her career, she climbed step by step until she reached the opportunity to compete for the vacant world title on September 2, 2009 against Dakota Stone, whom she defeated at the Mohegan Sun Grandstand, in New York.

Christy is remembered for her light pink boxing suit and her come forward style, throwing accurate, fast and, impactful punches. Never dull, her fights were eagerly awaited by the fans who admired her courage, flair and fighting spirit.

Christy Martin was a true inspiration for many women who, at the end of the 90s, were encouraged to train, become  professionals and shine under the arc lights of  the ring.
