One of Don Jose Sulaiman´s cherished dreams was to recognize the dedicated work carried out by the boxing trainers, a fundamental fulcrum in the development of fighters.
In 2018 this dream was crystallized and realized when the WBC implemented the Trainer’s Belt. Stephan Pryor, son of the legendary champion Aaron Pryor, contacted our President Mauricio Sulaimán and thus this great concept was established.
The WBC designed and developed a special belt, inspired by the traditional towel used at all times by boxing trainers, to reward any trainer who works so hard to crown a world champion of the WBC.
The trainer figure is essential for the success of the fighter. In most cases they take a fighter from a very young age, even becoming a paternalistic figure; They teach them the basics of boxing, motivate them, guide them in their private lives and they often devote absolutely everything to them; They generate the combat strategy and execute the fight plan from the corner.
Many great trainers have worked side by side with great fighters helping them build their impressive careers…legendary champions who will continue to be the inspiration for this concept.
Charley Goldman, trainer of Rocky Marciano; Jack Blackburn, Joe Louis trainer; Cus D”Amato, trainer of Mike Tyson; Jackie McCoy, coach of Amílcar Brusa & Carlos Monzón; Ray Arcel trainer of Roberto Duran, Don Pancho Rosales, trainer of Raúl “Raton” Macías, Angelo Dundee, trainer of Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard; Emanuel Steward, trainer of Tommy Hearns and other legendary Kronk Gym champions, Arturo “Cuyo” Hernández, trainer of great Mexican champions, such as Carlos Zarate, Rubén “Puas” Olivares and Lupe Pintor.
Currently there is a great generation of boxing trainers worldwide, which is why we celebrate being able to recognize them with the WBC Trainer’s Belt.
