Canelo vs Charlo is just around the corner, when two undisputed kings contest the throne for only one kingdom.
We recap Canelo and Charlo’s path leading towards this mega fight. What it took and how they achieved it, to get thus far, to this exalted pinnacle point.
John Ryder
Canelo loyally returned to his homeland Jalisco to face brave and durable John Ryder. The British boxer fought Alvarez for 12 rounds, withstanding but not overcoming Saul’s dominance. He was down in five but managed to fight back and survive. This was on May 6, 2023. Canelo put on a great grandstand show in Jalisco, leaving its people with a victory to savor, celebrate and remember for many years to come.
Gennady Golovkin
Triple G was Canelo`s triple rival. The pair met for the third and final time on September 17, 2022, in a fight that went the whole distance. At the end of twelve thrilling rounds, Canelo emerged victorious, leaving GGG with two losses on his record…both from him.
Dimitri Bivol
Canelo decides to move up a division to face the tall and bigger Dimitri Bivol, in a fight that Bivol dominated. Canelo is a boxer who was appreciably coming up in weight and took the risk of again audaciously moving up to light heavyweight in search of glory. He encountered a complicated rival and with a well-prepared strategy. All of this happened on July 5, 2022.
Caleb Plant
Canelo became undisputed champion after defeating American Caleb Plant. Pre fight became heated with statements and tense, irritable confrontations. Canelo little by little deciphered Plant`s style and pruned him with a withering victory via KO in the 11th round.
Billy Joe Saunders
On the way to being undisputed, Billy Joe Saunders crossed paths with Canelo. A British southpaw who promised to beat Canelo without problems. Yet and however, pride sometimes comes before “A fail.” Alvarez dominated the fight without problem. He achieved victory after breaking Saunders’ orbital bone in round 8, this fight was the May 8, 2021.
Brian Castaño II
In a rematch fight, Charlo faced the Argentine Brian Castaño. Both fighters met a few months before when they clashed for the first time in a very close fight. Contrary to the first fight, Charlo gave Castaño a boxing lesson, applied unremitting pressure, drilled, dropped and then stopped him, to became undisputed super welterweight title on May 14, 2022.
Brian Castaño I
This fight was highly anticipated because the new undisputed super welterweight championship was up for grabs. Castaño showed aggression and a lot of power, managed to put Charlo in trouble, then Charlo fought back hard and the fight ended in a draw, on July 17, 2021.
Jeison Rosario
In the midst of the pandemic, on September 26, 2020, Charlo dominated Rosario without any problem, with powerful blows and impressive overwhelming speed. Charlo sent Rosario to the canvas on 3 occasions to win two more belts before becoming undisputed champion.
Tony Harrison
Charlo had previously lost his WBC belt to Harrison, so this fight was a quest for redemption. Thrilling, Charlo managed sending Harrison to the canvas in round 2. It was to and fro, give and take. Then in a major tactical error/ strategic blunder, Harrison presented a mocking attitude towards Charlo, who needed no second invitation. He promptly dispatched Harrison to the canvas on two occasions knocking him out in the 11th all this on December 21, 2019
Jorge Cota
After having lost his belt to Tony Harrison, Charlo returned to the ring to face, force and overcome Jorge Cota, who he knocked out in just 3 rounds, using incredible speed and pinpoint destructive power. Charlo was heading for a rematch against Harrison, all of this on June 23, 2019.
